| Changes to NZ's climate change law | The Government is making a number of changes to the NZ ETS, Climate Change Response Act and the date at which government agencies will need to be carbon neutral, as well as exploring opportunities to help recognise and reward non-forestry removals in the carbon market. Changes include a moving the annual ETS setting decisions from an annual process to biennial and a removal of the allocative baseline reviews and eligibility reviews from the CCRA. Read more here...

Accelerating bioenergy in New Zealand | The Government has released its Wood Energy Strategy and Action Plan and a Government Statement on Biogas. IEA Renewables 2025 and Gas 2025 | The IEA has released Renewables 2025 and Gas 2025 which are the IEA's main annual reports on the renewable and gas sectors respectively. This years Renewables 2025 forecasts for the deployment of renewable energy technologies in electricity, transport and heat through 2030. Gas 2025 outlines the major changes that the global gas markets are set to undergo by the end of the decade, with the coming wave of LNG production capacity set to profoundly transform market dynamics. Renewables surpass coal generation | Global renewable electricity generation surpassed coal generation for the first time on record in the first half of 2025, according to new analysis from global think tank Ember. This was driven by a strong rise in solar, and to a lesser extend wind. Renewables grew by 363 TWh to reach 5,072 TWh, while coal generation fell by 31 TWh to 4,896 TWh. The Government has published the Fuel Security Plan, following public consultation earlier this year. The plan focuses on four key areas, resilience against global supply shocks, domestic resilience, supporting domestic fuel alternatives and ensuring resilience in a transitioning market. The Fuel Security Plan is a key part of the current Coalition Agreement to safeguard transport and logistics systems and emergency services from any international or domestic disruption. We are working on submissions for the EA consultations on 'Improving electricity billing in New Zealand' and 'proposed Code Amendments to improve access to product data'. Further EA consultations we are planning on working on include 'maximising benefits from local electricity generation', the next phase of the level playing fields work, and 'improving prudential security arrangements. Aurecon supports TagEnergy to acquire ACE Power | Aurecon has supported Portugal-based TagEnergy to acquire ACE Power from Pelion New Energy. This acquisition adds 6GW of wind, solar and BESS to the Australian renewables landscape and expands Tag's pipeline to 10GW nationwide. Flexibility Baselining Research report | Much of the current focus in Aotearoa’s flexibility sector has been on the operational side, such as setting up systems and aligning communication protocols, with less attention on how to measure, validate, calculate and reward the performance of flexibility services by using baselining. To explore this, Ara Ake has commissioned the Flexibility Baselining Research report from the University of Otago. The goal is to understand which baselining methods are being used in Aotearoa and overseas and start a conversation about how flexibility services providers can prove deliverability and be rewarded for their services.

PowerCo's 10-year Gas Asset Management Plan | Gas has such an important role to play in the energy transition. That’s why Powerco’s Gas Asset Management Plan sets out how they’ll continue to maintain and invest in their network for Kiwis. That work will ensure gas continues to support electricity generation, reduce the scale and cost of electrification, and keep options in the overall energy mix to support resilience and customer choice. At the same time, the gas distributor is investing in the development of biomethane — a renewable, low carbon gas option that could be used in the future.

EECA is seeking feedback on a green paper outlining how to unlock the potential of demand flexibility through products and appliances used in homes. By reducing grid congestion, smart technology can make our renewable energy go further, lessen the need for costly infrastructure upgrades, and ensure energy is there when it is needed. Feedback will inform EECA’s ongoing work in addressing key issues in this area, which could include developing information for households, voluntary specifications for end-use products, and/or further research.
