The start of October saw the release of Frontier Economics assessment of New Zealand's electricity market performance and the associated Government plan of action "At a glance: New Zealand's Energy Package. The government has created two workstreams to deliver their proposed policy package which aims at increasing investment in energy security and building stronger markets across the broad sector. MBIE releases RFI for leveraging government energy demand

As a part of the policy package in the Government's plan of action MBIE has released a request for information which seeks responses from businesses with potential energy projects that would add to electricity and/or (non-transport) fuel supply. 

The information gathered through the RFI process will give the Government a better understanding of potential energy projects. This is open until the 12th of November. Read more here...

Energy transition: amping up or powering down? 

Global energy transition progress is resilient despite headwinds, according to experts speaking on a panel exploring shifts in global energy markets. While factors including geopolitics and US policy shifts are creating uncertainty, the fundamental drivers for clean energy remain robust worldwide. What's driving the energy transition, however, is shifting. Where once sustainability considerations were the primary concern, today energy security and affordability are informing decision making - but panellists predicted that this will still push the transition and could even accelerate it. Australian and Japanese firm's partners for liquid hydrogen supply chain

Australian oil and gas producer Woodside Energy (WDS.AX), is teaming up with Japan Suiso Energy (JSE) and utility firm Kansai Electric Power Co (KEPCO) to develop a liquid hydrogen supply chain between the two countries. The companies have signed a MOU to supply liquid hydrogen produced at Woodside's proposed H2Perth project in Western Australia via liquid hydrogen carriers to receiving terminals in Japan. New BEC member: Electricity Engineers Association

The Electricity Engineers’ Association (EEA) is a cross- sector membership organisation that guides and equips the electricity sector to electrify Aotearoa. They do this by developing and sharing industry rules and best practice, shaping and delivering knowledge and capability, providing advocacy, information and advice, and connecting people across the sector. Their three strategic focus areas are technical best practice, workforce capability and connecting the sector and we have key activities underway to deliver outcomes for each. Aviation Fuel: NZ needs to keep up

Australia’s recent A$1.1 billion investment in low-carbon fuels, including Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), has prompted the newly established New Zealand SAF Industry Roundtable – a cross-sector group – to recommend that New Zealand move swiftly to evaluate Australia’s policy settings as they emerge, and consider how they might be mirrored or adapted to suit local needs. The SAF Industry Roundtable has been formed to support government agencies in developing SAF policy.

ComCom seeks feedback

ComCom is currently considering an application from Unison Networks for a catastrophic event allowance to help recover the costs of restoring electricity services after Cyclone Gabrielle. Their draft decision is to reopen Unison’s DPP3 price path and allow a $2.703 million increase in revenue. Submissions can be sent to 

infrastructure.regulation@comcom.govt.nz 

Deadline is 4pm, 10 October 2025. (Please include ‘Unison catastrophic event reconsideration consultation’ in the subject line)

Support for gas users

For many businesses, gas has long been a reliable part of daily operations. But supply in New Zealand is tightening, and prices are becoming harder to predict. Many businesses are now facing shorter contract terms, higher prices, and fewer retailers to choose from. These challenges aren’t going away, but there are practical, effective steps businesses can take now to cut energy costs, stay productive, and improve resilience. EECA worked with industry experts to create a resource hub to help gas using businesses measure, manage, and reduce energy use.

Aquila Clean Energy NZ: Expression of Interest for a PPA

Aquila Clean Energy New Zealand is looking for Expressions of Interest for a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) from their Edgecumbe and Marton solar farm projects. This PPA would be for 100% offtake.
